The Lima Senior DECA students are getting Lima Senior ACTIVATED! As one of just a few schools awarded the PICH (Partnerships to Improve Community Health) Grant and St. Rita’s Health Partners Activated School Challenge, Lima Senior High School is doing its part to get students and staff physically and mentally healthy through the DECA Teen Life Choices (TLC) project.
DECA students have been working since May on different ways to improve the overall health of Lima Senior students and faculty. The students worked to create a solid action plan that will be implemented over the remainder of the school year as a part of the Activated School Challenge.
Late last spring, Lima Senior DECA students had the opportunity to meet at the Bradfield Community Center to begin the conversation on minority health in Allen County. This discussion brought several health issues to the forefront for students and encouraged the need to act to make their school environment even healthier.
The TLC Action plan includes additions to school offerings and clubs that are designed specifically to get the students within Lima City Schools thinking healthy more often. Every Thursday, Lima Senior is now offering a full salad and fruit bar to encourage healthy eating and introduce new fresh foods to students as well as staff.
To encourage physical fitness, the TLC project is creating a new walking club that will encourage a more physically fit Lima Senior. This walking club, which is set to begin next week, includes incentives to both join the club and complete a certain level of success. The walking club will culminate in the club walking a 5K together.
Mental health is also a large component of this project. Through the efforts of the Spartan Health Center and Health Partners of Western Ohio, the TLC project will also include panel discussions on drugs and mental health. These panels, with professionals provided by Health Partners of Western Ohio, will give students a personal opportunity to begin the discussion on the steps to become mentally healthy and drug free.
Congratulations to Lima Senior on being chosen to take part in the Activated School Challenge! We wish you much success in your journey to create a healthier environment within the walls of your school!
